"In a certain way, works of art would make fools of us were it not that their fascination is proof – unverifiable, though undeniable – that this paralysis of the intelligence combines with the most luminous certainty. What that certainty is I do not know"

Jean Genet Abstract from the book “What remains of a Rembrandt torn into four equal pieces and flushed down the toilet”

Vision

At the same time, Icaro C.A.G.A is setting up an art shop with contemporary functional items created by its team, as well as by independent visual artists who combine contemporary art with tradition and culture. It is after the manifestation of folk art in the modern world by exploring new media and its themes, prompting artists and the public to join the dialogue on the contemporary patterns applied to search for the folk emotive, driven mainly by functionality, fundamental necessity and passion in creation. Some pieces are inspired by the ceramic manufactory that once operated in Rhodes, IKAROS.

History

IKAROS was the ceramic manufactory of the grandfather of one of the founders of Icaro C.A.G.A, who bought it out after the end of the Italian Occupation of the Dodecanese. The ceramics of IKAROS, based on the pottery of Iznik, Turkey, adorn the most famous monuments and sights of Rhodes and constituted an essential purchase for all the visitors of Rhodes. Nowadays, collectors throughout the world are in quest of the few remaining pieces.

IKAROS closed down unexpectedly, following the death of its owner and his wife in a car accident in June of 1987.

The people who perceived Icaro C.A.G.A are born in Athens, with roots in Sicily, Constantinopolis, the Ionian Islands and Rhodes. They spent their childhood in the places of their origin, growing up surrounded by wood, clay and colours. There, they came into contact for the first time with the arts, the artists and craftsmen and had the chance to work and spend time with them. They were initiated in the arts in houses and manufactories frequented by people-carriers of tradition, solidarity and respect. After completing their higher education on the disciplines of economics and marketing, they studied theatre, which has been their field of occupation and creation since 2005 drawing inspiration mainly by the past that has nurtured them and the future they aspire to experience.
